Waiting on waveguides from Poland before I can start building the boxes - need to measure final dimensions for them...
Been 3 months now, and still waiting :'(
Sadly i've been told "garuanteed delivery in up to 6 months". Not happy to say the least :(

Yeah cept I left them at work today...
I guess it'll be a project for the weekend - mount the compression drivers to the waveguides, run the mids free air, and have a listen :P

Then find some poor sucker to make me the boxes :)

Woot, this will be nice. If you finish them before nationals you can bring them up for everyone to have a listen and use them as a nice set of PA speakers. :PAnt

Hah Ant, finish before nationals?! I guess it is a possibility seems I won't be building them:P

You're welcome to come down for a listen once done, but sadly there wouldn't be enough room in my car for me to take these anywhere.

Thats what I thought, if you weren't building them they would be done on time. lol.

I'll have to take you up on that offer next time im down there. Cheers.

Well I have them here...
My only dilema is how do i mount the compression driver to the waveguide?
It's a 2 bolt type, but there's not enough room to get a screw in between the waveguide and compression driver.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Pics to come...

Is there enough room for a nut? or even better 2? Get some rod, thread it into the comp driver and cut it to the right length so sticks through the mounting plate of the waveguide, and have the nut already there to screw into. Ant

Blu tac's out if you wanna compete fuzzy. It's in the rules n00b.

maybe email the maker of both waveguide and driver and ask their opinion?

Syds idea is a good one too but.

Emailing the waveguide builder was the first thing i did...
Sadly they're from the other side of the world and seems to take forever to get a reply out of.

HOLY crapE BATMAN!
I got one fired up and playing now and all I can say is WOW!
Crossed at 1.5khz to the Dyn MW170 in my MorDyns, and just wow...
Detailed, effortless, smooth! (even without foam, or EQ'ing the waveguides midrange boost!)
Only the slightest hint of honkyness which is most likely due to the natural hump in the midrange caused by the waveguide.

Best part is i've been walking around my (small) room listening for tonality differences, and the change in tonality is so small and subtle it's crazy awesome.
Sounds the almost the same regardless of where I am in the room (within the speakers directivity limits obviously). I'm incredibly impressed so far!

Damn these things are bigger then I thought too... i expected 12" outer diameter, these are more like 15" outer diam! Massive! And also deeper then the 12" woofers, so probably going to mount them on the back of the baffle to help align the voicecoils. (Go physical time alignment!)

Ok so pics off my "quality" phone :P

Ok ok...
They are horns!
Just turned it up to unlistenable levels (which they happily do off tiny power), and it does start to get a bit messy :P
Definately needs a bit of taming, but shouldn't be too bad at all i dont think.

Scary thing is I have one compression driver on -12db compared to 2 8" drivers, and it's still too loud!
Not to mention the compression driver is being fed about 50wrms (@16ohm) and the woofers are getting 350wrms each.

Can't really reduce it any more through the processor... so may need to look at an lpad for them!

That worries me, I will have 100+rms into my horns in the Teg! Then about 200rms into the mids

You can atleast lower gain on the horn amp, and reduce output in pxa by 12db...
I don't have any adjustment at the amp end for gains, so it's only ~12db on the processor for me.

Wow they are some nice big waveguides, look very nicely constructed. did the bolt and nut thing work, I think i can make out the nut in one the photo's.

Got someone to start building the box?

And more importantly, are you deaf yet?

They're decently constructed, incredibly smooth - a few small blemishes around the throat that i will try smooth and sand out.
They will also be reinforced (extra layers of fibreglass, maybe dynamatted) to make sure they don't resonate. The boxes will be either 25mm or 50mm thick, so don't want 5mm thick waveguides letting sound through.

Yeah I did end up using threaded rod and a nut... Bunnings didn't have M6 thread so i had to buy some bolts (high tensile too) and hack the head off - not fun!

Think i've got a culprit to help with the box building, but doubt it'll happen until later in the year as they are quite busy.

I can still hear... just... :P
Started playing around with foam too, man it makes a huge difference, even just 25mm thick egg crate foam in the throat!

Anyone know where I can get 6" or 8" thick open cell foam?
